The US administration is considering the possibility of buying the Chagos Archipelago from Mauritius.
This was reported by The Daily Telegraph, citing sources.
Washington aims to strengthen control over the Chagos Archipelago, which hosts a US-UK military base in the Indian Ocean. The goal is to counter China's growing influence in the region.
Before this step, the US must also confirm the agreement between the UK and Mauritius on the transfer of sovereignty over the archipelago.
In 2025, the UK and Mauritius signed an agreement to return the Chagos Archipelago to Mauritius. Under the deal, the US-UK military base on Diego Garcia will operate for 99 years.
Historically, the Chagos Archipelago was part of Mauritius. In 1965, it was separated by the UK as a distinct administrative territory. Later, the US built a military base on Diego Garcia, and the local population was displaced.
