Ophthalmologist Darya Orlova warns that sunglasses without ultraviolet (UV) filters are more dangerous than wearing no sunglasses at all.
According to Regions.ru, dark lenses without UV protection only create a dimming effect. As a result, the pupil dilates and more UV rays enter the eye.
This mainly damages the retina and lens, increasing the risk of serious eye diseases.
Low-quality plastic lenses with optical distortions further strain eye muscles, causing fatigue.
The expert recommends buying sunglasses only from specialized optical stores. A spectrometer can check the protective properties.
Orlova emphasizes that sunglasses are not just accessories but medical devices essential near water, beaches, and mountains.
UV rays remain active even on cloudy days, so quality UV-filtered sunglasses should be worn outdoors during daylight. Contact lenses cannot replace the full protection of sunglasses.
