Modern children struggle to focus. Excessive screen use causes autism-like symptoms, termed "virtual autism".
A Drexel University study found that 12-month-old children's screen time increases the risk of autism symptoms at age 2 by 4.2%. Risk is higher for those watching screens over 4 hours daily.
Other research shows that 19.7% of children spending 3+ hours daily on phones/tablets exhibit social communication deficits and autism-like symptoms.
Early and prolonged screen exposure leads to speech delay, attention deficit, and hyperactivity 2.3 times more often than in other children.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no screens for children under 18-24 months, and a maximum of 1 hour daily for ages 2-5.
To protect children, parents, teachers, and governments must collaborate. Many countries have imposed age restrictions on social media. For example, Australia bans social media for children under 16.
Alternatives like sports, arts, and outdoor play should be offered to divert children from screens. We all must mobilize to save our children.
