Archaeologists in Peru have discovered a freeze-dried potato that is approximately 500 years old, predating the independence of the United States.
According to Fox News, the unusual find was made in the Tambo Viejo area of the Acari Valley in southwestern Peru.
The study was published in the Journal of Field Archaeology. The discovery proves that the Incas used advanced preservation methods to transport food over long distances.
The potato dates back to the Inca Empire. Photos show two shriveled, brown freeze-dried potatoes that still retain their shape and color.
Professor Lidio Valdes, who led the excavations, said: "The only difference is that they are small, likely due to the arid climate over time."
