Scientists have trained bees to recognize human faces. In the experiment, bees received sugar syrup for correct choices and bitter quinine for mistakes.
During tests, bees accurately selected the correct face over 80% of the time, even with new photos. They perceive faces as whole configurations, not individual features.
With about 950,000 neurons, bees perform complex visual tasks. This ability stems from their adaptation to foraging and navigation.
The discovery matters for agriculture, as bees are key pollinators. According to FAO, 35% of global crop production depends on pollinators.
