A person has died from hantavirus infection in Colorado, USA. Health officials say the death is unrelated to the outbreak on the cruise ship MV Hondius.
The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment confirmed the case in Douglas County. "We are investigating a confirmed hantavirus death in an adult resident. This is not connected to the illness on MV Hondius," the statement said.
Officials did not disclose the exact date of death. Sin Nombre hantavirus cases typically occur in spring and summer, transmitted by deer mice. Public risk remains low.
According to CDC, 121 hantavirus cases were reported in Colorado from 1993 to 2023.
Earlier in May, 10 cases of hantavirus were detected on MV Hondius, with three deaths. The ship was sailing from Tenerife to the Netherlands. Passengers were confined to their cabins.
