Germany's Federal Prosecutor's Office has brought the first charges against a Ukrainian national suspected of involvement in the sabotage of the Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines.
According to ARD TV channel, the accused is former Ukrainian soldier Sergey K. Chief Prosecutor Jens Rommel charged him with attacking civilian energy infrastructure, causing an explosion, and destroying structures.
Investigators say Sergey K. led a sabotage group and commanded the sailing yacht "Andromeda," which transported explosives in autumn 2022. He is now in pre-trial detention in Hamburg, arrested in Italy in summer 2025 and extradited to Germany.
Authorities found evidence on his mobile phone linking him to the attack. The crew, including civilian divers, placed improvised explosive devices on the Baltic Sea floor.
The Nord Stream system was built to export Russian gas to Europe. The first line carried over 50% of Russian gas exports to Germany. The second line was filled with gas but not yet operational.
