Delsy Rodriguez, acting president of Venezuela, has declared a seven-day national mourning from July 1 to 7 in memory of those killed in devastating earthquakes on June 24.
Rodriguez announced on X social network that the country is in deep sorrow over the human losses caused by the earthquakes. She expressed condolences to the families of the deceased, wished a speedy recovery to the injured, and offered support to the missing persons' relatives and affected communities.
The tremors occurred on the evening of June 24. Two consecutive earthquakes of magnitude 7.2-7.5 were recorded about 40 seconds apart. Their epicenters were located in Yaracuy state, 10 km apart.
According to the latest official data, 1,943 people were killed and 10,571 injured. Medical aid is being provided to 28,380 victims in hospitals and field camps.
