Earlier, the newspaper "El Pais" had reported 900 deaths based on preliminary data.
Last month, the Spanish State Meteorological Agency recorded the second hottest June since 1961, with an average temperature of 23.2°C. The highest was in June 2025 at 23.6°C.
Monitoring of heat-related deaths has been conducted since 2015. The previous high was in 2017 with 1,000 deaths. Currently, a heat warning has been issued in several regions, with temperatures expected to exceed 40°C.
