European airports and airlines have sent an appeal to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

They are calling for a temporary suspension of border checks during peak summer travel to reduce congestion.

The letter, signed by ACI Europe, Airlines for Europe, and IATA, warns that current checks cause long queues and flight delays.

They propose allowing airports to halt checks in July and August if passenger flow exceeds capacity.

The system requires non-EU citizens to provide fingerprints and photos.
