The International Criminal Court (ICC) has temporarily removed Prosecutor Karim Khan from his duties following allegations of sexual misconduct.
The decision was made by the Bureau of the Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute. Khan will remain suspended pending the conclusion of a disciplinary investigation.
The court stated the decision takes immediate effect. The matter has been referred to the Assembly of States Parties, which will convene a special session to discuss it.
The suspension is based on an investigation report by the UN Office of Internal Oversight Services, available evidence, and expert recommendations.
In November 2024, the Assembly initiated a probe into Khan over the allegations. He went on administrative leave in May 2025.
In 2023, Khan issued arrest warrants for Russian President Vladimir Putin and Maria Lvova-Belova. Russia subsequently opened a criminal case against Khan and ICC judges, stating it does not recognize the court's jurisdiction.
