US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Washington expects the opening of the Strait of Hormuz before engaging in negotiations on Iran's nuclear program.
In an interview with The New York Times, Rubio said the nuclear issue cannot be resolved with a quick fix on a napkin.
"The strait must be opened immediately. Then we will begin serious talks on uranium enrichment and Iran's commitment to never possess nuclear weapons," he said.
Rubio indicated that the US administration could agree to a temporary deal only if it immediately eliminates Iran's ability to develop nuclear weapons.
Iranian authorities have repeatedly stated that their nuclear program is solely for peaceful purposes and they have never sought an atomic bomb.
