The legendary Major Oak in Sherwood Forest, UK, has died. The 1,000-year-old tree failed to produce leaves this year.
According to folklore, Robin Hood and his merry men hid inside this giant oak. It attracted 350,000 tourists annually, with a trunk circumference of 11 meters and a canopy of 28 meters.
Climate change, drought, and human impact caused its demise. Record temperatures of 40°C in 2022 were the final blow.
The dead oak will remain standing as part of the ecosystem. Conservationists urge the government to strengthen laws protecting ancient trees.
