The US Senate has rejected a $1 billion bill for security upgrades to the White House's East Wing, part of Trump's modernization plan.
"Republicans tried to make taxpayers pay for Trump's billion-dollar banquet hall. But Senate Democrats opposed and foiled their first attempt," said Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer.
The bill, proposed by the Senate Judiciary Committee, aimed to fund security measures, not the banquet hall directly.
Secret Service Director Sean Curran noted that if approved, $220 million would go toward bulletproof glass, drone detection, and toxic substance detection systems.
Senate Republican leader John Thune said the bill has been sent back for revisions.
