Texas is set to open a specialized medical facility to assist minors who have undergone gender transition procedures.
According to NBC, the Texas Children's Hospital has reached a settlement following an investigation into its transgender youth medical program.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton stated that under the agreement, the hospital must establish the country's first "detransition clinic." The clinic will provide services free of charge for the first five years.
"Detransition" refers to the cessation of previous gender transition procedures. Possible medical interventions include psychotherapy, hormonal therapy, and surgery.
As part of the deal, the hospital must fire five doctors who previously performed such procedures. Additionally, the hospital will pay a $10 million fine for submitting fraudulent claims to the state's Medicaid program.
Earlier, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, under Robert F. Kennedy, stated that gender transition surgeries for minors are not consistent with healthcare standards. President Donald Trump declared at his inauguration that official U.S. policy would recognize only male and female genders.
