The Earth's population could halve by 2064 if a serious ecological crisis occurs.
This was stated by researcher Alessio Zaccone in an article on Phys.org.
The scientist emphasizes that this scenario is not a definitive forecast but a mathematical model showing possible outcomes.
Researchers used an equation reflecting human growth dynamics over the last 12,000 years.
According to them, the current natural trend does not lead to an apocalypse. However, global climate disasters, large-scale pandemics, destructive wars, or resource shortages could drastically change the situation.
The model suggests that in such a negative scenario, the planet could only sustain about 2 billion people.
The expert recalls that scientists have previously warned that current consumption levels exceed sustainability limits. Ecologists believe that ideally, around 2.5 billion people should live on Earth. Currently, the global population exceeds 8 billion.
