A failing hazardous chemical tank containing highly flammable material experienced a critical internal temperature increase overnight, complicating containment operations and sustaining widespread residential evacuations in Southern California.
California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency for Orange County as emergency personnel continue response operations at a GKN Aerospace facility in the Garden Grove suburb of Los Angeles.
The incident involves a structural tank holding up to 7,000 gallons of methyl methacrylate, a flammable chemical used in plastics and aviation manufacturing. Orange County Fire Authority Division Chief Craig Covey confirmed that internal chemical temperature rose to 90 degrees Fahrenheit, increasing at about one degree per hour.
Authorities warned of potential catastrophic vessel rupture, toxic spill, or explosion. Incident commanders deployed personnel to neutralize a larger adjacent 15,000-gallon tank to limit secondary explosion risks.
Technical teams are analyzing water cooling protocols, while engineering crews construct containment dikes. GKN Aerospace confirmed collaboration with emergency experts and apologized for disruptions.
