Baku TV has prepared a report about the Kish temple in Sheki, which President Ilham Aliyev mentioned during the opening ceremony of the 13th session of the World Urban Forum.
Guide Gulnaz Rasulova provided information about the temple, noting that Sheki, with its historical monuments, including UNESCO-listed examples, is a center of attention for both local and foreign tourists.
"One of these monuments is the Kish Albanian temple located in the village of Kish in Sheki. This church is considered one of the monuments that laid the initial foundation of Christianity not only in Azerbaijan but throughout the Caucasus. Research has shown that even before the church was built, this area was a religious center for the Albanians."
Because excavations here revealed the remains of an ancient Moon temple that existed before the church. On these remains, Saint Yelisey's arrival in Azerbaijan in the 1st century AD and the construction of a church here laid the foundation of Christianity. Since people were engaged in religious activities there, Saint Yelisey built the first church precisely in this area, establishing the basis for the spread of Christianity.
