Iran's former ambassador to Azerbaijan, Seyed Abbas Mousavi, has once again made provocative statements. He claimed that Iran does not accept changes in geopolitical borders in the region.
Mousavi used the phrase "Caucasus is our home," presenting the region as Iran's sphere of influence. He also alleged that Azerbaijan is being left out of discussions regarding the Zangazur corridor.
Iran's approach to the South Caucasus as a zone of influence, not as independent states, is unacceptable. In the 21st century, the Caucasus is nobody's empire.
The Zangazur corridor is about opening transport links, not changing borders. Iran remained silent during Armenia's occupation but opposes new cooperation.
Azerbaijan has always pursued a restrained policy and even sent humanitarian aid. Iran, however, insists on confrontation and destructive behavior.
Tehran even tramples on its own "red line." The region needs integration and mutual respect.
