June 15 – National Salvation Day is one of the most significant milestones in the modern history of the Azerbaijani people. This date is not just the anniversary of a political event, but also holds special importance for preserving the independent Azerbaijani state, restoring statehood traditions, and defining the fundamental principles of future development.
These remarks were made by MP Mushfig Mammadli in an interview with Oxu.Az.
The deputy noted that after restoring independence, Azerbaijan faced a number of serious challenges:
Having regained state independence in 1991, Azerbaijan in subsequent years encountered severe political, economic, and military problems. Particularly in 1992-1993, the country experienced a power crisis, significant governance shortcomings, economic decline, ongoing military aggression by Armenia, occupation of territories, and activities of various armed groups that threatened the future of statehood.
The events of June 1993 increased the risk of civil conflict, and Azerbaijan effectively faced the danger of losing independence and disintegrating.
During this complex and fateful period, the return to power of nationwide leader Heydar Aliyev at the insistent demand of the people laid the foundation for a new phase in the country's political life. On June 15, 1993, Heydar Aliyev's election as Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the Republic of Azerbaijan was a crucial step towards restoring stability and state governance.
As a result of decisive measures taken in the subsequent period, socio-political stability was ensured, state institutions were strengthened, the rule of law was restored, and Azerbaijan's independent development strategy was defined.
Mammadli emphasized that the political course established during that period formed the basis for subsequent development:
The 'Contract of the Century' signed in 1994, which occupies an important place in world energy history, created conditions for attracting large volumes of foreign investment, strengthening economic potential, and enhancing Azerbaijan's international position. At the same time, thanks to a balanced foreign policy, Azerbaijan became recognized as a reliable partner in the international arena.
Today, under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev, this political course is successfully continued. The socio-economic achievements of recent years, large-scale infrastructure projects, strengthening of our army, and the growing international prestige of our state are successful results of this policy.
In particular, the historic victory in the 2020 Patriotic War and the anti-terrorist measures in 2023 resulted in the full restoration of Azerbaijan's territorial integrity and state sovereignty, realizing the long-standing national goal of our people. At the core of these successes lies the statehood strategy defined by nationwide leader Heydar Aliyev.
National Salvation Day is a celebration of the unity, national solidarity, and state will of the Azerbaijani people. This day reminds every citizen of the importance of preserving state independence, stability, and protecting national interests. National Salvation Day holds a special place in our history as an expression of respect for the past and a symbol of confidence in Azerbaijan's future development.
