Muslim American groups criticize Republican-led congressional hearings targeting sharia law, calling them a weapon against Muslims. Islamophobia rising.

Muslim American groups say Republican lawmakers are using congressional hearings to stoke fear against Muslims. The hearings are titled 'Sharia-Free America.'

Republicans hold a majority in both chambers. A House Judiciary subcommittee hearing was held Wednesday. A similar one took place in February.

Critics argue the hearings single out Muslims, revive conspiracy theories, and are unnecessary. There is no evidence that U.S. Muslim groups advocate for sharia law.

The U.S. Council of Muslim Organizations condemned the hearings as 'weaponization of government against American Muslims.'

Islamophobia is on the rise. CAIR recorded 8,683 anti-Muslim complaints in 2025, the highest since 1996.
