After years of war, establishing relations with neighboring Armenia confirms Azerbaijan's commitment to peace and stability in the region.
This was stated by Hikmat Hajiyev, aide to the President of Azerbaijan, during the 1st General Assembly of the Global South NGO Platform (GSNP).
Hajiyev noted that Azerbaijan faced occupation and military aggression: "Six years ago, about 20% of our territory was under occupation. We experienced foreign military aggression, occupation, destruction of cultural monuments, ethnic cleansing, and large-scale demolition of cities."
He emphasized that currently nearly 13% of the country's territory remains contaminated with mines: "But we were able to end this, restore our sovereignty and territorial integrity, and start a process of cooperation and mutual engagement with neighboring Armenia. This demonstrates Azerbaijan's goodwill, pursuit of peace, and readiness to take responsibility for shaping new realities in the South Caucasus."
