The idea of 'Return to Western Azerbaijan' is today a strategic goal of the Azerbaijani state and nation. Return to those lands is our right based on international law. After the 44-day Patriotic War, return to our historical lands is our national idea.
Oxu.Az reports that the chairman of the Western Azerbaijan Community, Aziz Alakbarli, stated this in his speech to journalists within the framework of the I International Conference 'Return to Western Azerbaijan: As a New Stage of the National Idea'.
He noted that recent negotiations between the President of Azerbaijan and the Prime Minister of Armenia create great confidence for lasting peace in the region: 'We welcome this initiative of the heads of state and view these negotiations as an opportunity for return to our historical lands.'
Nevertheless, in our historical lands of Western Azerbaijan, now the territory of Armenia, our compatriots have created a very rich cultural heritage over centuries and millennia. Studying this heritage, conveying the historical truths about Western Azerbaijan to our people and the world public remains a main goal for the Western Azerbaijan Community.
Alakbarli noted that the Western Azerbaijan Community continues its propaganda and promotion work through both international and domestic events: 'At the same time, archival materials are being researched. Sources not previously introduced into scientific circulation are being uncovered, maps are being discovered. The Western Azerbaijan Community, together with other relevant institutions, conducts systematic and consistent work on this issue.'
