Trump-backed Ed Gallrein defeats Thomas Massie

Ed Gallrein, backed by U.S. President Donald Trump, defeated incumbent Rep. Thomas Massie, a prominent Trump critic, in the Republican primary for Kentucky's 4th congressional district, NBC News projects.

The primary was seen as a test of Trump's influence to punish his critics. Massie had represented northern Kentucky since 2012.
