Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has signed a proclamation declaring May 28, 2026 as Azerbaijan Independence Day in the capital, marking the 108th anniversary of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic.

According to Oxu.Az citing AZERTAC, the proclamation also notes that 2026 marks 35 years since the restoration of Azerbaijan's independence.

The proclamation states: "The Azerbaijan Democratic Republic carried out far-reaching administrative reforms, ensuring full citizenship and political rights for all citizens regardless of ethnicity, religion, social status or gender. The Embassy of Azerbaijan in Washington and the active Azerbaijani community are an integral part of our city's cultural, educational and economic fabric."
