A UN official, Anna Soave, stated that air pollution is the second leading cause of death globally. According to the "State of Global Air 2024" report, it is especially dangerous for children under five whose lungs are still developing.
WHO data shows that about 7 million people die prematurely each year from air pollution. 89% of these deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries. This number exceeds deaths from malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS combined.
UNICEF warns that nearly 2,000 children die daily from air pollution, more than one per minute. The elderly also face serious risks of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. Low-income families are particularly vulnerable as they often live near old heating systems, industrial sites, or heavy traffic.
