The WUF13 event saw high participation, reflecting both the scale of global engagement and the immense responsibility ahead.
Annalena Baerbock, President of the UN General Assembly, sent a video message to the opening of the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13). She emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to sustainable urban development.
"Let's face it: there are no simple solutions to a crisis of this magnitude. Building more housing is necessary but not enough. Improving living spaces requires integrating infrastructure, basic services, climate resilience, financing, and inclusive planning," she said.
She stressed the need for cooperation among local governments, communities, civil society, the private sector, experts, and citizens. "People should be seen not just as beneficiaries but as active drivers of development."
"The New Urban Agenda remains our key common guideline. Its goals for inclusive, safe, sustainable, and people-centered cities are as relevant today as a decade ago," she added.
A high-level meeting in July will focus on the mid-term review of the New Urban Agenda. Baerbock expressed hope that discussions at WUF13 will be substantive, inclusive, and practical.
