UN Assistant Secretary-General Elizabeth Maruma Mrema stated that low-carbon green infrastructure - urban forests, restoration of wetlands and rivers, green corridors - should be considered as natural technology.
Speaking at an event within WUF13, she said: "Trees filter air pollution, vegetation reduces heat load. Wetlands manage floods, green corridors improve ventilation and air flow. Together, they directly improve air quality and increase resilience to climate shocks."
She highlighted that Baku's Master Plan until 2040 aims to increase green areas to 8 square meters per person and defines hybrid green corridors as a key concept. "This is practical urban infrastructure that makes the city more ventilated, cooler, and healthier. Let's scale up this program," she added.
