Bernadette Chirac, the widow of former French President Jacques Chirac, has died at the age of 93.
French media reported that she passed away after a long illness.
Bernadette Chirac was the first and only First Lady in French history to hold elected political office. She was elected to the municipal council of Sarran in the Corrèze department in 1971 and served as general councilor of the department from 1979 to 2015.
She met Jacques Chirac while studying at the Paris Institute of Political Studies, and they married in 1956. Their marriage lasted over 63 years until Jacques Chirac's death in 2019.
