Former US National Security Advisor John Bolton has reached a plea deal with prosecutors.

He will plead guilty to mishandling classified information and pay over $2 million in fines.

According to CNN, Bolton is charged with illegally retaining classified documents from his time at the White House.

The guilty plea could result in up to five years in prison.

Bolton is accused of keeping personal diaries and sending them to his wife and daughter via email.

The court hearing is set for June 26.
