Brazil's government is considering countermeasures against the European Union's (EU) restriction on meat imports from Brazil.
Luiz Rua, secretary of trade and international relations at the Ministry of Agriculture, told "Folha de S.Paulo": "If we realize we are not being treated as partners, we have some ideas on how to respond."
Brazil hopes to convince the EU to lift the ban through negotiations, but may invoke the principle of reciprocity in international trade.
The EU officially confirmed the restrictions on June 5, citing Brazil's failure to control excessive antimicrobial use in livestock. Rua insists Brazil can provide all necessary technical assurances and restore its meat exporter status.
