The US Supreme Court has supported the right of states to pass laws restricting transgender athletes from participating in women's and mixed sports teams.
According to Oxu.Az, citing CBS News, the court upheld laws in West Virginia and Idaho that limit transgender youth participation in school sports.
Justice Brett Kavanaugh stated in his opinion that schools can select athletes for women's teams based on biological sex rather than gender identity.
This decision protects similar laws currently in effect in 27 US states.
The restrictions come amid widespread debate over fairness in sports competitions in recent years.
Last year, President Donald Trump signed an executive order banning federal education programs from allowing transgender girls to compete in women's sports.
