US President Donald Trump called the Supreme Court's decision to uphold birthright citizenship a "victory for China".

On his Truth Social platform, Trump wrote: "I want to congratulate Chairman Xi and the great Chinese people on their big win on birthright citizenship."

Earlier, Trump had said the right should apply only to children of legal permanent residents.

He claims wealthy Chinese use this to get US citizenship for their children.

The Supreme Court ruled his proposal unconstitutional.
