The head of the Accusations Commission of Colombia's lower house, Gloria Arisabaleta, has ordered President Gustavo Petro to be removed from office until June 21.
Oxu.Az reports this citing the newspaper "El Tiempo". According to the publication, the decision was made as a precautionary measure. On June 9, the commission launched two disciplinary investigations against Petro for possible illegal involvement in political campaigning.
This was prompted by the president's public statements, particularly an aggressive speech against the opposition in the Cordoba department. Although the Colombian Council of State had previously forbidden the president from interfering in the current electoral process, Petro disregarded these restrictions.
The campaign ban applies to the president's public speeches, broadcasts on official government television and radio channels, as well as posts on digital platforms.
