The Gemini North telescope, located atop Hawaii's highest mountain Mauna Kea, has captured a dying star in its final moments.
According to the Associated Press, this is a binary star system 1,500 light-years away, nicknamed the "Crystal Sphere Nebula." As the star shed its outer layers, the remaining core heated the gas cloud to thousands of degrees, making it glow brightly.
Scientists say one of the two stars orbiting the planetary nebula has already ceased to exist. The Gemini North telescope observed this nebula, officially known as NGC 1514, last year and its color image was finalized this week.
