The Ebola epidemic raging in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda could become one of the largest outbreaks in history.
According to a report by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), if only 20% of patients are isolated, there is a 65% chance that the number of infections could reach 20,000 within three months. With 70% isolation of the population, that risk drops to 5%.
The report states: "These results highlight the importance of effective public health interventions. The current epidemic is the largest recorded outbreak of Ebola caused by the Bundibugyo virus and could become one of the largest Ebola outbreaks in history."
As of the latest data, 452 cases have been confirmed in the DRC, with 82 deaths.
