A former member of the Russian State Duma, Magomed Hajiyeva, has been sentenced to life imprisonment.
The Supreme Court of Dagestan issued the verdict, finding Hajiyeva guilty of orchestrating the murders of two people and extortion on an especially large scale.
According to the court, in 2011 Hajiyeva organized the murder of Maqsud Sadıkov, rector of the Institute of Theology. The rector and his nephew were shot in the courtyard of their home in Makhachkala.
Additionally, the Hajiyeva brothers seized control of a majority stake in Sudoremont JSC through threats. The damage is estimated at over 93 million rubles (more than 2 million manats).
Magomed Hajiyeva was sentenced in absentia to life imprisonment in a special regime colony and a fine of 900,000 rubles (approx. 21,000 manats).
His brother Akhmed Hajiyeva, convicted of extortion, received 10 years in prison and a fine of 900,000 rubles.
