Scientists have discovered surprising genetic similarities between cancers in cats and humans.
Analysis of nearly 500 feline tumors revealed striking overlaps, particularly in genes linked to aggressive breast cancer.
Similarities were also found in cancers affecting blood, bones, lungs, skin, gastrointestinal tract, and central nervous system.
Because cats often share the same environment as their owners, common environmental factors may contribute to cancer risks.
Treatments already used in humans may eventually be tested on cats, and feline cancer research could guide future human clinical trials.
