Hantavirus can remain active at room temperature for up to two weeks. This was reported by infectious disease specialist Yulia Yermolaeva from Novosibirsk State University.
The optimal condition for the pathogen is 4°C with high humidity. Infections occur year-round, but peak in summer and autumn.
In winter, mice seek warmth in homes and garages, increasing risk. Poor ventilation raises airborne transmission.
WHO recently reported a hantavirus outbreak on a cruise ship from Argentina to Cape Verde, with three fatalities.
