The US Navy base in Bahrain, home to the Fifth Fleet, has been severely damaged by Iranian retaliatory strikes and is no longer able to perform its core functions, according to The Wall Street Journal, citing Pentagon sources and satellite imagery analysis.
The report states that the headquarters building, training complex, port infrastructure, barracks, and warehouses have all suffered significant damage. The Pentagon is considering relocating some functions to other facilities in the Middle East.
The total construction cost of the base is estimated at $400 million. The base has served as the main hub for the Fifth Fleet since 1995 and lies 240 km from the Iranian coast.
