Two Israeli soldiers have been arrested for insulting a statue of the Virgin Mary in Lebanon.

According to the Associated Press, one soldier placed a cigarette in the statue's mouth while another took a photo.

The soldier who took the photo received 21 days in prison, while his comrade who filmed the act was sentenced to 14 days.

Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson Ariella Mazor emphasized that the military takes such incidents seriously and respects religious freedom.
