Jackson Pollock's "Number 7A, 1948" sold for a staggering $181.2 million at Christie's auction. This is nearly three times the artist's previous auction record.
According to Artnet News, the artwork was the top lot at a glamorous evening auction in New York. It was estimated at $100 million before the sale.
Six bidders competed fiercely, with the winner participating by phone (name undisclosed). When one bidder raised the offer to $154 million instantly, the room gasped.
Pollock created this iconic piece in 1948 at age 36.
