Japan's parliament has proposed amendments to the Imperial Household Law to address the succession crisis. Currently, Emperor Naruhito has only three heirs: his younger brother Fumihito, nephew Hisahito, and uncle Hitachi.
Two options are under discussion: first, allowing female members to retain their status after marrying commoners; second, reinstating male members from 11 former collateral branches who lost status in 1947.
The proposals are expected to be submitted to Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi soon, with a bill possibly passed by July 17.
