Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused France of colonial attitudes towards African countries.
He spoke at a press conference after the BRICS foreign ministers' meeting in New Delhi, India.
Responding to Macron's labeling of others as "real colonialists of the 21st century," Lavrov said: "Who knows better than the French what real colonialism is?"
He recalled a meeting five years ago where European diplomats considered Africa part of the EU.
Lavrov emphasized: "That is their philosophy. It is probably in their genes. Our yardstick is different."
