Mass Arrests in Armenia: Ex-Ministers and Yerevan Ex-Mayor Detained

Armenia's former Minister of Transport and Communications, also ex-Mayor of Yerevan, Gagik Beglaryan, has been detained.

The Anti-Corruption Committee has not yet officially stated the reason, but earlier a criminal case was opened against him for embezzlement of 27 real estate properties and causing $5.7 million in damages to the state.

He also faces multiple charges of money laundering and abuse of power.

Additionally, former Education Minister Armen Ashotyan, ex-Rector of Yerevan State University named after Bryusov Gayane Gasparyan, former Finance Minister Gagik Khachatryan, ex-Defense Minister Vigen Sargsyan, and three vice-rectors have been detained.

The Prosecutor General's Office reports that a corruption scheme was organized involving the former education minister and others.
