Iran's current Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has informed officials of his intention to attend the funeral of his father, former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
According to The New York Times, citing two members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and a funeral organizer, the ceremony will take place on July 9 in Mashhad.
Mojtaba Khamenei plans to perform the funeral prayer over his father's body. However, security officials are hesitant to approve the initiative, fearing a potential assassination attempt by Israel or tracking of his route to his hideout.
The farewell ceremony for Ali Khamenei began in Tehran yesterday. His body will be buried at the Imam Reza shrine in Mashhad on July 9.
