Moscow Zoo has announced a major plan to save the descendants of Pablo Escobar's 'cocaine hippos', which are now out of control in Colombia.
The hippos will be relocated to Russia and other countries to protect the local ecosystem and preserve the species.
The initiative is led by Svetlana Akulova, director of Moscow Zoo and president of the Global Association of Zoos. An official request has been sent to the Colombian government.
India's 'Vantara' wildlife rescue center will create a special environment for the hippos. Zoos in Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America have also offered support.
Experts are working on distribution to minimize inbreeding. Escobar illegally imported four hippos from Africa in the 1980s.
