The lower house of the Polish parliament (Sejm) has passed a bill legalizing same-sex unions.
The "Closest Person Status" bill creates a legal framework for registering non-marital unions, including same-sex couples. It now moves to the Senate.
President Andrzej Duda's office said he does not support the initiative. Duda favors only a notarial form of registration.
The bill is a compromise within the ruling coalition. Poland's constitution defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman.
