The Polish government plans to build subways in the country's 10 largest cities. The main goal is to use the metro both as a means of transport and as a strategic shelter during possible military operations.
According to RMF FM radio station, the Polish Ministry of Infrastructure has already launched the "Metro Poland" project. The work will be carried out under the "Protection of the Population and Civil Defense" law.
Currently, only the capital Warsaw has a subway in Poland. In December 2025, Warsaw Mayor Rafal Trzaskowski presented a project to turn the metro into a shelter for 100,000 people. In case of war, stations will be equipped with beds, blankets, and drinking water.
