Inmates at INJUBA prison in Barinas state, Venezuela, have taken control of the facility.
Over 1,300 prisoners, including women, began protesting right after the national anthem in the morning.
Some climbed prison towers and set mattresses on fire. Guards responded with gunfire.
Relatives tried to block the National Guard from entering but failed. Shots and explosions were heard, and tear gas was used.
The riot is blamed on the strict new rules imposed by the prison administration.
